2012 was a big year for ROBLOX and our users. Along with the many product releases and events that came along, we released a bunch of new gear and saw our users create a bevy of new and unique ROBLOX games. We thought we’d take a look back at the top 15 most popular games of 2012 and, while we were at it, dig up some item and gear statistics as well. Remember, we’re only counting data from 2012 — some of these popular games have millions more visits when you consider their lifetime stats.

Comparing the top games from this past year to the top games of 2011 yields some interesting results — only three of the top games on the list were on both lists. This speaks volumes about our platform –some games get it so right that they can stand the test of time. But with so many new and innovative games constantly flooding the Games page, this is a rare occurrence. Call of ROBLOXia: ROBLOX at War, Base Wars: The Land, and Rollercoaster Into a Black Hole Obby stood the test of time, appearing on the top 15 list for two years in a row.
Let’s move on to gear. We decided purposely to exclude gear items that were promotional because those items were free, and we want to know which gear sold the most over the course of the year. Here’s the list.
Most Sold Gear of 2012
- Body Swap Potion – 26,321 sold
- Spray Paint – 11,949 sold
- Egg Cannon 9000 – 11,002 sold
- Speed Coil – 9,386 sold
- 2013 Firework – 9,319 sold
- Phoenix – 9,084 sold
- Flying Magic Carpet – 8,867 sold
- Bluster Buster – 8,376 sold
- Captain Steelshanks Recruiting Staff – 7,232 sold
- Telamax xTreme Dual Shoulder Cannons – 6,847 sold
The best-selling gear item of the year was the Body Swap Potion. When equipped, you can click on another place and you will swap appearances and locations with that player. This chaotic capability is useful in a wide variety of contexts, which probably explains some of its popularity. In a battle game, it affords all kinds of exciting tactical options to confuse the enemy. In a social game, it’s just pure fun to ape your comrades.
Finally, let’s look into our top-selling items. We’ve removed from consideration all promotional items that we published this year (some of which were incredibly popular).
Most Sold Items of 2012
- Ostrichsized Winter Scarf – 22,673 sold
- Tweet Tweet – 22,660 sold
- Crimson Winter Scarf – 20,814 sold
- Valentine’s Day 2012 Cap – 19,817 sold
- Spiky Halloween Shades – 19,636 sold
- Saint Patrick’s Day 2012 – 19,242
- Red Flowered Cloche – 18,011
- Dark Blue Light Hair – 14,617
- Charming Brown Haired Fellow – 13,300
- Opened Gift of the All Seeing Eyes – 13,297
Despite being released in mid-December, OstrichSized‘s winter scarf was our best seller for the year. I talked to Web Team Lead Isaiah Merrill (aka OstrichSized) about this virtual item, which is modeled after his trademark winter scarf. He pointed out that this item hit the “sweet spot” between “style,” “seasonality,” and “pure value.” Pick one up today for 20 Robux in the catalog while supplies last!

When you’re in a game, concentrating on throwing knives or mining gems, it’s hard to step back and think about just how expansive ROBLOX is. But with 4.5 million active users each month, and a game library that could last you and all of your friends a lifetime, it’s quickly apparent that ROBLOX is huge. Now that 2014 has come to an end, we’ve had the chance to take a look at the numbers from December — and the year as a whole. The kinds of games that were popular on ROBLOX vary from hardcore action, to casual sims, and even games that redefine genres. We’ve compiled the numbers so you can see how many times the most popular ROBLOX games have been played. (Spoiler alert: a lot.)

Again, Dued1’s Work at a Pizza Place stands at the top, still riding its resurgence of popularity from the autumn redesign, and bolstered by its inclusion in the ROBLOX Holiday event. In fact, all of the ROBLOX Holiday games saw a significant boost in play sessions, including The Quarry, which snagged the number four spot.
The Quarry was one of the most played ROBLOX games of December.
The trio of popular murder genre games are back, but check out those numbers. Taymaster’s Twisted Murderer commanded a rather firm lead, with over 930,000 more visits than the next game on the list, loleris’ The Mad Murderer!
Keeping the trend of Speed Run games getting sequels faster than you can beat them, Speed Run 4 is in the number six spot. The Speed Run series is simple in concept, but its fast pace and gradual difficulty curve make it an excellent game for gamers of all types. It’s amusing to note that all four of the current Speed Run games are made by different developers. At this rate we’ll have Speed Run 19 by the end of 2015!
Now, let’s take a look at the top 20 games for the entire year.

It’s probably not a surprise to see The Mad Murderer topping the list. Since its release in April, The Mad Murderer has nearly always been on the front page of ROBLOX. Its impact on ROBLOX is clear, evidenced by banner ads and thumbnails inspired by it, as well as games that have used some of the monetization and structure that makes The Mad Murderer so successful.
But The Mad Murderer’s predecessor, Murder Mystery, is right up there too. With its sequel, it’s only been re-gaining in popularity. It’s awesome to see the murder game that started the year right back up there at the end of it.
The game credited with starting the “murder” craze is still alive and kicking!
Classics and new favorites
There’s a good smattering of games that were created this year in the top 20. Perhaps most impressive is Taymaster’s Twisted Murderer making the list despite being available for a mere four months. And DizzyPurple’s ROBLOX Top Model, a fun way to use catalog items in game, resonated with a large number of ROBLOX players with its unique gameplay.
Some of the games ROBLOX is best known for continue to stay popular. Natural Disaster Survival, Apocalypse Rising, Work at a Pizza Place, and Call of ROBLOXia continue to attract players in droves. All of those games are very different, but they have the same things in common: they’re fun, they’re high-quality, and they showcase the skills of ROBLOX’s talented developers.
Are your favorite ROBLOX games on the list? How many of these games have you played? If you’re ever wondering just what other ROBLOX players like you are enjoying, this list a good menu of what makes ROBLOX such a big gaming community. All of these games are huge successes, and so are the dozens and dozens that follow in the list. The 100th most popular game of the year, Hide n’ Seek XL, was played over 1.9 million times this year! That’s awesome.
Congratulations to the developers who made the awesome games that make ROBLOX fun, and thanks to you guys, the players, for continuing to make ROBLOX your gaming destination and supporting the developers’ hard work.
